WASHINGTON -- The House on Thursday backed a measure aimed at ensuring students get college loans amid the turmoil in the credit markets.

The credit crisis is spreading to college loans as more lenders drop out of the business. More than two dozen nonbank lenders have stopped making college loans and last week, three large banks followed suit.
